ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 has been developed to be compatible with the previous version of ISO 14001 Environmental management system standard in order to facilitate the integration of quality, environmental and occupational health and safety management systems by organizations, should they wish to do so.
The Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental Management Standards
An overview of the standards:
ISO 9001
The ISO 9001 standard provides a framework around which a quality management system can effectively be implemented and focus on the process model as a system platform with continual improvement being the driving force to enhance customer satisfaction. This standard gives new opportunities for companies to use the quality management system as a strategic tool which can help them to exceed "compliance to requirements" and move towards business excellence.
ISO 14001
ISO 14001 basically establishes a co-ordinated and formal framework of controls with which to manage environmental protection. It is an internationally accepted standard for an Environmental Management System, specifying requirements for establishing an environmental policy, determining environmental aspects and impacts of products, activities and services. It requires that environmental objectives and measurable targets are planned and that defined programs are implemented to meet the objectives and targets.
OHSAS 18001
OHSAS 18001 is an Occupation Health and Safety Assessment Series for health and safety management systems. It is intended to help organizations to control occupational health and safety risks. It was developed in response to widespread demand for a recognized standard against which to be certified and assessed. It does not state specific OH&S performance criteria, nor does it give detailed specifications for the design of a management system.
OHSAS 18001 was created via the concerted effort from a number of the world’s leading national standards bodies, certification bodies, and specialist consultancies. A main driver for this was to try to remove confusion in the workplace from the proliferation of certifiable OH&S. specifications.
